After hundreds of years of happily ruling other countries through Empire, making many little Britains in other countries - Britain’s idea of multiculturalism in those days was allowing slaves in the house - it appears we don’t seem to appreciate it if we have to see those cultures as equal to our own. Britain’s suspicion of multiculturalism has grown massively in the wake of the London bombings, and it seems that rather than have ‘them’ live in different communities, retaining their own culture and values, we’d rather they became British, or piss off back to their own countries.
Now I have lived in Leicester for 3 years, two of those years spent in Evington, where as a student me and a few others were literally the only white people living in the community. During this period I never saw a fight, nor did I feel threatened - even during the post-9/11 raids that took place throughout Evington, something that I certainly felt uncomfortable with, a whole community victimised for something that happened thousands of miles away.
I know what it is like to live in a single race environment, I spent the first 18 years of my life living in a small town in Devon (which has a guarenteed fight every Friday and Saturday night), where for the first 14 years of my life I had only ever encountered one black person. Yet I don’t seem to have any fears about meeting people of different race or culture, but maybe that is purely because I don’t read the Sun or the Daily Mail, or any other neo-nazi fascist papers. We have British people living all across the world, most in sheltered communities, most not integrating, most not even speaking the national language, why don’t these people be forced to ‘integrate’ or piss off?
Or maybe if they have earned the right to legally live in another country, they have the right to live whatever life they choose, subject to local rules of course. Not all people living in a community that we can view as distinct from the national community in Britain are terrorists, or terrorist sympathisers. In fact it is probably one in a million, it is like saying we should throw every single person out of britain because a few of us will murder/rape/steal etc, a few will, but millions wont.
To look at the millions of ethnic minorities that live in Britain and compare that to the actions of around 10-20 involved in the London bombings shows just how ridiculous it is to marginalise the masses because of the few. To destroy multiculturalism was Hitler’s* dream, it should not be ours.
